On April 20, the inhabitants of the planet admired a rare astronomical event – a hybrid solar eclipse. It was observed in the southern hemisphere: in Western Australia, Indonesia, in the waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

In breathtaking images of a total hybrid solar eclipse, Western Australia and Indonesia are plunged into pitch darkness. During the eclipse, the width of the moon’s shadow on the earth’s surface will be 49 km. It began as annular – over the Indian Ocean. The total eclipse will be visible from the Cape Peninsula and Barrow Island (Western Australia), as well as in East Timor, from Damar Island, in the province of Papua (Indonesia). The eclipse will end, just like an annular one, over the Pacific Ocean.

Astronomers predict that the next hybrid eclipse will occur in 2028, and the “happy” place from which it can be seen will presumably be in the New South Wales region.

Reference

A hybrid solar eclipse is a rare astronomical event. In the 21st century, only 3.1% (7 out of 224) of solar eclipses are hybrid. This name was given because two types of eclipses united in one phenomenon at once: annular and total. At the very beginning and at the end, the eclipse is observed as annular, and in the middle – as total.
