Angela Merkel remembered everything…

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not support the entry of Ukraine and Georgia into NATO during the summit in 2008, and also convinced other allies of the inexpediency of this decision. This was stated by Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov in an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Razon, published on Sunday, April 16.

According to him, “the West has long lived in the dogma not to provoke Russia.” “There was a very feasible possibility that Ukraine and Georgia would become new members (of the alliance). The Americans were for this work, like most Europeans, but it was German Chancellor Angela Merkel who opposed and convinced the rest, ”Reznikov said.

The Minister noted that air defense systems are a priority for Kyiv today. The head of the Ministry of Defense is also sure that Western fighters will receive the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as happened with tanks. At the same time, Reznikov questioned the seriousness of the “nuclear threat” from the Russian Federation, noting that Ukraine had already become a de facto member of NATO.

Earlier, Reznikov said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are preparing for a counteroffensive, so Kyiv calls on European partners to strengthen military assistance with heavy equipment. In addition, he admitted that the government is waiting for the upcoming NATO summit, where member countries will confirm Ukraine’s ability to “fight against the Russian Federation.”

The head of the defense committee in the Bundestag, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, went further and accused the Chancellor of starting large-scale hostilities. In an interview with the German television channels RTL and n-tv, she stated that Angela Merkel, as chancellor of Germany, made a number of decisions that made a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine possible.

By the way, the German MP, following the Ukrainian minister, considers Germany’s refusal to open the way to NATO membership for Ukraine the first major mistake in this regard. According to Zimmermann, in 2008, many NATO countries advocated the speedy admission of Ukraine into the alliance, but Germany and France then opposed because of Russia’s position.

“[Это] was a big mistake on the part of the French and Angela Merkel at the time,” the German MP said.

According to Strack-Zimmermann, Germany will now have to rethink the entire period of Angela Merkel’s rule and “especially the history of the last few years, full of miscalculations.”
