FBI Arrests Two Chinese Agents in New York, Charges Dozens of People

Late Monday night, the FBI arrested two Chinese agents, Lu Jianwang and Chen Jinping. The agency says China has built up a huge network of agents over the past two years, especially in New York, even running an illegal police station.

In addition to the arrests of people accused of torturing people of Chinese origin, dozens of people currently on the wanted list have also been charged with persecuting Chinese citizens – arrest warrants have been issued against them. The individuals, whose names have not been released, are believed to have returned to China.

The FBI says China has set up a large network of agents, especially in New York City, whose purpose was to control the Chinese community and to spread coordinated disinformation through the media and social media. Radio Liberty sources in the US Department of Justice say that the targets of the slaughtered group were mainly leaders of humanitarian organizations, as well as political groups that openly spoke about the suppression of freedoms in China.

NYPD spokesman Breon Peace said 34 out of 40 are employees of China’s Ministry of Public Security and belong to the “Special Project 912 Task Force,” a division of Chinese intelligence agencies that surveils Chinese opposition in other countries.

Human rights organizations have previously reported that Chinese intelligence agencies have an extensive network of semi-legal police offices in no less than 53 countries around the world. They are engaged in surveillance of Chinese citizens, in some cases, their persecution, blackmail and return to their homeland.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has not yet made an official statement regarding the arrests and charges. Official Beijing does not deny the presence of its police units in different countries of the world, but claims that all of them are exclusively engaged in supporting the Chinese living abroad, such as assisting in obtaining new documents and renewing old ones, such as a driver’s license.
