Pentagon: "It’s a deliberate felony" (video)

Yesterday afternoon, the FBI arrested a member of the National Guard in Massachusetts on suspicion of involvement in the leak of classified Pentagon documents.

Merrick Garland, head of the Department of Justice, said that “in connection with an investigation into the alleged unauthorized removal, storage and transmission of classified national defense information,” 21-year-old Jack Teixeira was arrested.

When agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested the man on Thursday, he did not resist, the operation went “without any obstacles.” Jack Teixeira will appear before the US District Court of Massachusetts. If his guilt is proven, the ex-military faces up to 10 years in prison.

Teixeira has served with the 102nd Air Force Reconnaissance Unit in Massachusetts since 2019, where he was responsible for maintaining computer systems.

The Pentagon is conducting an internal investigation and assessing the damage caused by the release of confidential documents. This is one of the largest information leaks from the department in the last decade. Patrick Ryder, Pentagon spokesman, said:

“It’s important to understand that we have strict regulations in place to protect classified and confidential information. This was a deliberate criminal offence.”
