Refugee accommodation center in Lavrio closes

According to ANT1, the decision to close the refugee center in Lavrio was made and is connected with the policy of rapprochement between Athens and Ankara, which continues after the earthquakes in Turkey and the ensuing aid to Greece.

After four decades of operation, the center is expected to “be a thing of the past”. It is noted that from time to time the Turkish government struck at the center, accusing Athens of preparing “Kurdish terrorists” in it.

According to ANT1, the center has hardly received any new refugees since 2017, but about 100 people have taken refuge there, mostly political refugees belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, as well as families. Half of them, according to ANT1, agreed to be transferred to another place of residence.

It is also noted that the municipality of Lavrio plans to use the vacated space to house its municipal services. The decision was made two months ago, right after the earthquakes in Turkey. Refugees and their families will be transferred to other centers such as Malakassa.
