Bild: In Germany, problems began with the insurance of Ukrainian cars. What about in Greece

In German Saxony, they want to decommission Ukrainian cars that have not been insured for more than a year. Such an initiative was made by the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Saxony, Armin Schuster, writes Bild.

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs recalled that in a situation where the car does not have insurance, a German citizen who has an accident with such a car through no fault of his own will be forced to pay for the damage himself, which puts him in a disadvantageous position. Accordingly, he suggested checking Ukrainian cars for insurance.

According to the General Association of Insurers, more than 100 such cases have already occurred in Germany, writes Bild. For the first 12 months, Ukrainian refugees with personal cars are allowed not to register cars and not receive local numbers that can be used to buy German insurance. Therefore, they often travel on a “green card” or without it at all.

In Greece, the situation with cars with Ukrainian license plates is also not fully understood. Recently, the authorities stated that, according to Greek law, owners of cars with Ukrainian numbers, 6 months after entering the country, must either leave its borders or re-register the vehicle for Greek numbers. In this case, the owner of the car will have to pay customs duty and pay local taxes.

However, this topic has recently faded away. Numerous Ukrainian refugees, having arrived in Greece more than 6 months ago, were able to extend the documents for a car for an amount from 130 to 400 euros, while presenting Ukrainian insurance. In case of refusal to pay, the owner of the car must pay a fine of 1,700 euros, and his car will be sent to the penalty area.

The editors are not aware of cases when cars with Ukrainian numbers got into an accident. However, it is known that earlier there were cases when Ukrainian insurance turned out to be invalid in Greece and local insurers could not receive a refund from their Ukrainian colleagues.
