Switzerland: Two trains derailed, at least 12 injured

In Switzerland, two trains derailed, injuring many people on board.

Regional passenger trains derailed on Friday, just a few kilometers apart, about half an hour apart, north of Bern. One incident occurred with a train in Lüscherz and another with a train in the administrative district of Bern-Mittelland in the canton of Bern. In the first case, the number of victims remains unknown, while in the second there are at least 12, including three children. One of the wounded is in a critical condition, the health of the others does not cause concern.

According to the Bern police, the accident in Lüscherz occurred at approximately 16:30 local time on the Biel-Thauffelen-Anet line, with several wagons derailed. This section of the railway was closed, fire brigades and ambulances arrived at the scene.

The second accident occurred shortly before 17:00 local time, the tipping of part of the train led to the cancellation of flights. Rescuers were sent to the area where the gusty wind was blowing to provide first aid.

It is noted that a strong wave of bad weather hit Switzerland when stormy winds swept several areas. At the time of the crash, a measuring station in the nearby town of Koppigen recorded a gust of wind at a speed of 136 km/h. And since yesterday morning, the Swiss meteorological service has recorded more than 5,000 lightning strikes. The bad weather in Switzerland comes on the heels of Cyclone Mathis, which is advancing across much of the UK, causing heavy rains and gale-force winds.

The investigation into the circumstances of the train derailment continues. Switzerland is known for its dense rail network and frequent flights. As a rule, accidents here do not lead to a large number of victims, although the incidents on the railways in the country are not something exceptional.

Only eight people died in train accidents in Switzerland in 2021, according to the Federal Statistical Office, writes 24 heures. The deadliest disaster in the history of Swiss railways occurred on June 14, 1891, when the Jura-Simplon railway bridge collapsed.
