Zakynthos: tourist pilgrimage site closed again – risk of landslide high

Navagio Beach will once again be closed to locals and tourists for safety reasons, following the recommendation of the Organization for Seismic Planning and Protection (OASP).

According to a study carried out on March 8, 2023 by the OASP scientific team led by President Prof. Efthymios Lekkas, a significant risk of landslide due to slope erosion was found. Based on the results of the examination, a meeting was held, which was attended by the heads and representatives of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the Ministry of Island Policy. Ministry of Tourism, Greek Law Enforcement, Coast Guard, Local Authorities of the Ionian Region.

The Presidium of the Government decided to “prohibit access to Navagio Beach during this year’s tourist season.” It was also decided that the situation (with the possibility of landslides) would be assessed twice a year after new surveys of the area.

Recall that September 9, 2022 Zakynthos regional subdivision civil protection coordinating body decided to deny access for security reasons. “The safety of residents and visitors is above all, the decision was made taking into account the new scientific data of the OASP and President Prof. E. Lekkas, given the high attendance of the area during the tourist season,” said Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias.
