Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis strolled through supermarkets

Mr. Georgiadis, accompanied by Nikos Papathanasis, visited the store in Marousi, the first one during the “control check”. Then they intend to visit other supermarkets. A raid of officials was carried out in order to check the operation of the trade market, as well as how the “family basket” measure was observed.

Adonis Georgiadis expressed his satisfaction with the course of the “consumer basket” measure. “Both this week and last week we had a serious reduction in the prices of goods from the “family basket”. On average, over the past three weeks, the total cost of groceries has fallen by more than 3%. This shows (as we predicted, if you remember, I talked about this at the beginning of March) that we expect inflation to decrease. The difference is obvious in the “basket” example. Now we see flour for 0.87 euros. And if you remember, in our first raids on shops, its price constantly exceeded 1 euro.

The minister also made an announcement on cod prices ahead of March 25th. In the meantime, negotiations are underway with representatives of the meat market in order to keep prices down for Easter. “We are preparing to announce, probably even this week, cod prices. I will not hide from you that we are already negotiating with representatives of the meat market in order to understand how prices for traditional “Easter” meat products – goat meat and lamb – will fluctuate. I believe that with the measures that we are taking, we will be able to contain prices,” he said. “But in general, we are satisfied with the situation in the grocery trade market.”
