The white tiger cub is on the mend, the intervention of the prosecutor

The deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Administrative Court of Greece intervened in the case of an emaciated, sick and abandoned white tiger cub at the request of the Animal Welfare Federation.

4 month old, estimated female tiger cub was found thrown under a trash can near Zoo Attica in the suburbs of Athens. A white tiger cub was examined and veterinarians said the animal was malnourished with an extreme vitamin D deficiency and was paralyzed from the waist down. The general health of the animal was assessed as critical, the director of the park even spoke about possible euthanasia.

It is reported that Anastasia Masoura, Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Administrative Court, intervened after CCTV cameras showed that on February 28, the culprit had abandoned the calf under a garbage can near the zoological part of Attica in Spata.

The prosecutor ordered to find and identify those responsible for the abuse and abandonment of an animal, which, according to estimates, became a victim of the wildlife trade.

After being cared for for nearly a week, with the cub looked after by animal welfare organizations, the little tiger cub has shown some improvement in health.

According to a social media post on Saturday, Thassula Eptakili wrote: “She is enjoying the sun she has never seen before. She washes her front paws. Her back is paralyzed. However, she eats with gusto. She gladly accepted our caresses. She purred. The little tigress is fighting her own battle to stay alive as the police review footage from the moment she was abandoned.”

The director of Attica Park confirmed the improvement, saying that after the care, injections and vitamins given to the animal, it is getting better, but she cannot walk, according to state broadcaster ERT.

The white tiger cub is completely unable to use its hind limbs and appears to have undergone surgery in the past.

In a letter to the prosecutor Panhellenic Federation Nemesis The Animal, Environment and Hunting Authority requested a thorough review of the case of the young tiger. “The investigation should be about how this animal ended up in Greece, whether it was imported legally or illegally, whether it comes from breeding that took place in Greece, which surgeon operated on it and, of course, the conditions in which it lived before fell under a trash can,” Nemesis emphasized.

She recalled that “if the complaint of the Panhellenic Federation for the Protection of Animals and the Environment to the prosecutor’s office of Athens and Cyprus a year ago about the illegal breeding of a tiger had been properly considered, perhaps the tiger cub would not have been tortured, and the alleged illegal breeding of wild animals in the two countries would have become would be a serious problem.”

It should be emphasized that the Animal Rehabilitation, Care and Rescue Organization in South Africa showed immediate interest in the tiger cub and offered to accept it, as well as to take care of all transportation costs for transporting the animal to South Africa.

Nemesis and probably every animal lover in Greece support this idea, since South Africa is an outstanding natural habitat for these animals, and there are no specialized centers in Greece for keeping such animals.
