Taxi Drivers’ New Trick: Increasing Fare Bills

Taxi drivers in Thessaloniki drove with their taximeters turned off, recent traffic police checks have shown.

Dozens of fraudulent taxi drivers have charged their customers for arbitrary amounts by deactivating taximeters and instead using electronic apps on tablets or smartphones. As part of the fight against the phenomena of consumer fraud, in the period from 07-03 to 10-03, the Thessaloniki Traffic Authority conducted inspections of 126 taxi cars, 20 of which were found violations.

The Traffic Authority of Thessaloniki, in an effort to improve the quality of life of citizens and protect them from fraud and deceit, carried out an operational event in the area of ​​​​responsibility of the municipality from 07-03-2023 to 10-03-2023:

  1. 126 public transport vehicles (TAXI) were checked.
  2. 20 violations confirmed when drivers were caught with using the application “electronic taximeter” through laptops or mobile phones instead of activating the taximeter on your vehicle.

What citizens should be aware of: when getting into a taxi it is recommended to ask the driver where the meter isand it is important to know what is the same as mobile phones and tablets are not taxi meters. In addition, legal proof of service (sales receipt) must be requested before exiting the vehicle.
