The six convicted, despite admitting their guilt, were ultimately punished only symbolically. In this letter, the commission requests an investigation into the appeal against the verdict of the Athens court, both in relation to acquittal and conviction, in particular regarding the recognition of mitigating circumstances and the level of punishment.
Supreme Court prosecutor Giorgi Adilini sent a request to the Athens Appeals Prosecutor's Office to explore the possibility of filing an appeal against the decision on the Mati tragedy. G. Adelini's statement says the following:
“We ask you to carry out an ex officio appeal against those acquitted by the decision of the Triple Court of Athens in relation to the Mati case, as well as the confession mitigating circumstances in relation to persons convicted by the same above-mentioned decision that was applied to them, and the manner of imposing punishments in general.”
