In connection with the tragedy in Tempi, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared a three-day mourning in the country.
Today’s tragedy shocks and changes the political agenda. At about half past two in the morning, the prime minister was informed of a tragedy, the extent of which no one could really comprehend yet. Initially, it was about 5-6 dead, many injured and “trapped” people. However, with each passing hour, the information became more and more shocking. Kyriakos Mitsotakis did not expect the death toll to increase so much (the number of victims reached 32 people), but in the very first minute after receiving the information he decided to postpone his visit to Thessaloniki, where he was going to run for the upcoming elections.
The Prime Minister contacted the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, to discuss with her the possibility of visiting the site of the tragedy. Mitsotakis is in constant contact with Minister of Transport Kostas Karamanlis.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis has declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the Tempi train disaster from today March 1st to March 3rd. Flags on all public buildings will be at half mast and public events cancelled.
