Australia: live fish "rained down" to a city far from the sea

The skies suddenly opened up over Australia, “flooding” the town of Latyamanui, about 900 km from Darwin, with live fish.

This is the fourth time this has happened here in the last 30 years. At the same time, the fish fell from the sky alive, “was the size of two fingers” and brought a lot of joy to the local children, collecting it in jars. Andrew Johnson Japananga, city council member, says:

“We saw a major storm approaching our community and thought it would be normal rain. But when it started to rain, we saw fish falling from the sky. I think it’s a blessing from God.”

In the same city, it has already rained fish in the past. A similar phenomenon was observed in Latazmanu in 2010, 2004 and 1974, characterized by strong tornado-like updrafts that suck water and fish from rivers and throw them hundreds of kilometers away.

Geoff Johnson, an ichthyologist at the Queensland Museum, found that Australian groupers the size of a child’s hand were “raining down” here. It rained at night, and in the morning people saw fish scattered all over the city. Many of them were still alive.

Until now, the phenomenon is scientifically inexplicable. The phenomenon of a fish falling from the sky is unusual, but not unprecedented. Cases of rain with frogs, bats, worms, spiders have been recorded. However, the reason remains unknown. The main theory is that the creatures could have been carried away by a water vortex, a tornado-like column of air that forms above the water and carries the fish away from the sea through the atmosphere, writes CNN Greece. Ernest Agee of Purdue University says:

“We saw small lakes, almost empty of water due to the tornado that passed through the area. This would explain the “rain” of frogs (or other creatures) from the sky.”

A similar event took place in Texarkana, Texas in 2021. Then another theory was put forward: supposedly birds “spit out” fish when they fly over the city. The same explanation was given in 2022, when thousands of anchovies fell from the sky over San Francisco.
