500,000 laganas will be baked in Thessaloniki

More expensive, at a price increased by 7%, the traditional lagana will be prepared by bakers for Clean Monday.

Price lean flatbread this year fluctuates between 2.50 and 2.60 euros. According to the Union of Bakers of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, everything is ready for the production of at least 500,000 pieces of lagana.

Elsa Koukumeria, president of the Thessaloniki Bakers’ Association “Prophet Elias”, who decided to comment on the rumors “about 5 euros for 1 piece of lagana”, notes that “the dynamic return of consumers to traditional bakery products over the past two years speaks of trust between bakers and consumers. Instead of waging a confrontation – raising prices and making a fuss about them, it’s better to settle everything amicably. It is clear that both the producer and the consumer, each of them needs support in the difficult economic situation in which we all find ourselves.

As Ms. Cucumeria explains, the majority of citizens support bakers by “voting for the shops in their neighborhood.” That is, they buy fresh bread and rolls from bakers, and not in supermarkets, writes iefimerida.gr.

Speaking about prices, the president of the association states: “During the corresponding period last year (including Clean Monday), the price of laganas was set at the level of 2.30 to 2.40 euros per piece (with the cost of a 25-kilogram bag of flour for 12 -14 euros). This year the cost of flour starts from 19 euros and reaches 22 euros. And that’s just one prime example.”

According to her, the cost of raw materials in bakeries has increased from 30% to 50%. Ms. Cucumeria notes that the production of traditional “homemade” lagana is a tedious 12-hour production process. And on Clean Monday, each oven should work from 21:00 on Sunday evening, so that by Monday morning citizens can put fragrant freshly baked laganas on the table.
