Eurostat: 7.3% inflation in Greece in January and 8.6% in the eurozone

According to experts, it seems that the rise in prices has overcome its climax.

According to the latest data from Eurostat, the annual inflation rate in Greece was 7.3%. Besides, in EU it also fell to 10% and in the Eurozone to 8.6%. Obviously, citizens “can now breathe,” because it seems that the peak of price growth has been passed, writes ot.gr.

For our country, it is said that annual inflation was 7.3% compared to 7.2% previously estimated by Eurostat. Let us recall that, according to ΕΛΣΤΑΤ, last month the figure was 7.0%. European Union annual inflation was 10% compared to 10.4% in December and 5.6% in January 2023.

More low annual inflation rates Were registered:

  • in Luxembourg (5.8%),
  • Spain (5.9%),
  • in Cyprus and Malta (6.8% each).

Most high annual rates have been registered in:

  • Hungary (26.2%),
  • Latvia (21.4%),
  • Czech Republic (19.1%).

Compared to December 2022, annual inflation decreased in eighteen EU Member States and increased in nine. For one more month the highest contribution to the annual inflation rate in the Eurozone contributed:

  • alcohol and tobacco (+2.94 percentage points, p.p.),
  • energy carriers (+2.17 p.p.),
  • services (+1.80 p.p.),
  • non-energy manufactured goods (+1.73 p.p.).

As for Greece, according to the latest ΕΛΣΤΑΤ data, annual inflation slowed to 7% in January from 7.2% in December 2022, 8.5% in November and 9.1% in October. The index remained in a downward orbit for the fourth month after 12% in September.

However, when it comes to food, the picture is quite different, as it went from 13.5% in September to 14.8% in October, 15% in November and 15.5% in December 2022. While in January inflation was fixed at 15.4%, showing that “the peak has been passed.”
