New tunnels that will change Athens

Significant progress has been made on the construction of large urban tunnels that will facilitate the movement of citizens and reduce the constant congestion on the streets of the capital.

Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Karamanlis spoke about the projects, focusing, among other things, on the new city tunnels. First of all, Mr. Karamanlis mentioned the Iliopoleos tunnel, which, we recall, will become a continuation of the western regional road to Elliniko, writes carandmotor.gr.

According to current data, the project includes construction of a tunnel just over 3 km long, with three lanes for each traffic flow, which will begin to “go underground” at the height of Kesariani and “leave” on Vouliagmenis Avenue, near the metro station Agios Dimitrios. The road from Katechaki Avenue to Vouliagmenis Avenue will take about 10 minutes, while today – and especially during peak hours – the time to travel this distance reaches half an hour or more. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Mr. Karamanlis also mentioned the expansion of Kimi Avenue, which “will relieve traffic in Galatsi, Nea Ionia, Heraklion, Pefki, Likovrisi and Marousi”. Once the project is completed, a new exit will be created at Efniki Odos (at the Kaliftaki junction), and will put an end to the long “car tails” that form daily at the Metamorphosis junction. Of the project’s 3.5 km, 2.5 km will be in the form of a tunnel, which will be the longest in the city. The project will be completed by 2027.

It should be recalled that the underground road (tunnel) project at Poseidonos Ave. is being implemented at a rapid pace, which will also make a decisive contribution to unloading the road network. The project concerns the site with a total length of 1500 meters, of which 1300 meters will be underground, from Alimos beach to the height of the Ellinikos marina. According to the project, the completion of underground work is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024.
