Nursing home in Korydallos closed by order of the prosecutor

On Saturday, February 18, the scandalous nursing home in Korydallos was closed by order of the prosecutor. The elderly people there have been transferred to Athens.

The Ombudsman issued a conclusion confirming the validity of all complaints filed, which was shown by the audits. The elderly living in the nursing home were malnourished, in poor condition, unwashed and in dirty clothes, writes CNN Greece.

In accordance with the results of the checks, the elderly were not wearing clothes given to them by their relatives, moreover, some showed signs of starvation. Violations were also found in portions of food: 35 portions were given out for 56 people, that is, they were almost halved.

The greatest shock was caused by the disappearance of several elderly people – no one knew about their fate. That is, there is no official data on whether they died, or were taken to the hospital, or their relatives took them from there.

On Thursday, the Coordinating Committee for the Disabled will organize a protest near the nursing home in Eleftheriou Venizelos Square in Korydallos, stating their demands:

“We demand here and now human care in a safe place for all older people:

  1. Immediately bring to justice all those responsible and make them pay immediately.
  2. Immediately establish public nursing homes and institutions for the seriously ill who cannot take care of themselves, with high-quality and free services, open or closed, permanent or temporary residence.
  3. Include in the public sector the existing private nursing homes that respect human standards and ensure the permanent employment of all workers, and close unsuitable and dangerous ones by transferring patients to state structures along with workers.

Our publication talked about horrorthat were going on in this nursing home. The old people are emaciated, dehydrated and dirty, as their personal hygiene has not been given due attention. Several of them tested positive for Covid-19 and three older people had scabies. Some found bruises and wounds on the head and eyes. Complaints were received in December 2022. A former nursing home employee said the elderly were systematically subjected to physical and psychological abuse, including being deprived of essential medicines and tied to batteries or beds for “aggression.”
