A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred on Tuesday (2/14) in Romania. The quake was felt even in Sofia and Belgrade, but caused only minor damage, according to the USGS.
The tremor occurred at 15:16 (local and Greek time) in the province of Gorj. According to the US Geological Survey, the depth of the focus was 10 (in other sources 40) kilometers, the newspaper writes. pronews.gr.
Local disaster response services were checking the area as cracks were found in some buildings. But no major problems were found. For the second day in a row, a strong earthquake has reportedly hit Romania. Experts from the National Institute of Geophysics say “the tremors have nothing to do with the deadly February 6 earthquake in Turkey,” thus dispelling the fears expressed by many residents.
Romania, crossed by many tectonic faults, is one of the most seismic countries in Europe. On March 4, 1977, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake killed 1,570 people. At the same time, 11,000 people received injuries of varying severity. Most of the victims were recorded in Bucharest, since the city is built on the Vrancea fault, an earthquake-prone zone stretching from the capital to Iasi in the east.
