Rat poison in… elementary school

“We wanted to hurt him,” is how elementary school students in Lamia explained the attempt to poison their classmate with rat poison.

How tells lamianow.gr, a little elementary school student started drinking water from his bottle brought from home and spat it out because it was bitter. The teacher, noticing this, advised him to drink from the tap. Although it would be logical to ask why the water from the house turned out to be bitter …

A few hours later, a classmate of the schoolboy told his parents at home that the children had put rat poison in the water bottle of one boy. The mother immediately called the parents of the potential victim, and they took the child to the hospital, where he was examined for three days.

Fortunately, the amount of poisonous substance that entered the body turned out to be minimal – the bitter taste helped, which made the boy spit out water. When asked why the children poisoned a classmate, they “honestly” answered: “Because we wanted to harm him.”

Efthymios Goumas, head of primary education, “reported” the incident:

“We followed all the instructions. Children and parents are already under the supervision of a psychologist.”

But even three weeks have not passed since the day when Konstantinos Spalioras, the director of the secondary education of Phthiotida, crossed the threshold of the prosecutor’s office in order to raise the serious problem of violence between underage students before the competent authorities … And a few rhetorical questions, as always:

What moves kids when they say, “We wanted him to get hurt”? What would happen if a classmate did not share with his parents, and they did not notify the parents of the victim? What would happen if the poison was not bitter? How do dangerous substances get into the hands of children? And in the end, why don’t parents and teachers see what sometimes grows in children’s souls – hatred of one’s neighbor, cruelty, malice?
