Russian Citizen Arrested for Emails Threatening Airports and Hospitals

Police officers arrested a Russian citizen on Wednesday for sending threatening emails to Athens International Airport and six public hospitals in the Greek capital a day earlier.

The 42-year-old Russian was arrested in Thessaloniki in the early hours of Wednesday, January 25, by employees of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violent Crimes of Northern Greece. A case has been initiated against him for acts of terrorism, spreading false news, disrupting services, disturbing the peace of citizens and trying to interfere with transport, according to media.

The arrested man sent emails threatening to plant explosive devices at the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” and six hospitals in Attica on Tuesday. The emails also reportedly contained references to Islam.

These hospitals are Evangelismos, Gennimatas, Zaneio, Pammakaristos, Pedon and Errikos Dunan.

Both at the airport and in hospitals an alert has been declaredhowever, a thorough check by the security forces found nothing suspicious, leading the authorities to consider the emails to be a hoax.

Threatening emails were sent out after the airline was attacked on Sunday Ryanair an e-mail was sent with a “bomb warning”. The plane was heading to Athens from Poland and activated the Renegade emergency response system, causing F-16 fighters to escort it to Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. This letter also turned out to be a hoax.

The Russian citizen was brought to the competent prosecutor on Wednesday.
