Unprecedented incident at the congress of the Serbian Socialist Party: the Russian ambassador to Serbia left the hall in protest against the position expressed by the president of the opposition party, Alexis Tsipras, on Ukraine, who called the Russian operation “an illegal Russian invasion and a violation of international law.”
This provoked a strong reaction from Russian Ambassador Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko at the SPS congress on Saturday 17 December. The diplomat wrote on his Twitter page that he was forced to leave the congress of the Socialist Party of Serbia at the very beginning because of a video message that the Greek opposition leader Tsipras began with false accusations against Russia. As the diplomat said: “He began to slander my homeland.”
The Russian Ambassador to Serbia stated with regret that he was not present during the speech of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. In his speech, Vučić spoke about the situation in Kosovo and Metohija.
According to ERT, in his message, among other things, Alexis Tsipras mentioned “an illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine”, noting that this is “a violation of international law that cannot be accepted.”
The Greek official opposition adheres to the same point of view as the ruling party, and this is very disappointing for Moscow, which has been betting on SYRIZA for many years.
