On the island of Alonissos, they decorated an underwater Christmas tree (video)

The Greek island of Alonissos has decided to celebrate its connection to the sea and diving with a symbolic decoration of an underwater Christmas tree. This event kicked off the 2022 holiday season.

The alternative Christmas event took place on Saturday, December 10th. The mayor of Alonissos, Petros Vafinis, acted as the moderator, assisted by the chairman of the tourism committee of the municipality, Maria Agallow, diving instructors Dias Menis and Ilianna Gialama, as well as divers Vassilis Papaioannou and Thassos Outsas, with the support of the Triton Dive Center and Dimitra Mina.

The islanders were invited to the celebration and brought their own Christmas decorations to hang on the tree.

The video posted by the municipality of Alonissos also includes the municipality’s Christmas wishes with the message “Merry Christmas and 2023!”.

According to the mayor, this symbolic action is intended to highlight the fact that diving in Alonissos is a “philosophy of life” for every moment of the year, which plays a key role in extending the tourist season.

He called the dive “refreshing” and said the idea was warmly received by the locals.

The underwater Christmas tree decoration follows a series of underwater events organized on the island, such as underwater wedding in summer.

For the development of thematic tourism in Alonissos there is a unique Underwater Museum and National Marine Parkwhere the protected monk seal lives.
