Putin: “We are just thinking about it”

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Moscow is considering the possibility of delivering a “preemptive strike.”

This statement, as written CNN Greece, came just days after Putin assured that Moscow “under no circumstances” would be the first to use a nuclear weapon. However, on Friday in Bishkek, after completing his visit to Kyrgyzstan, answering a journalist’s question about the possibility of using nuclear weapons, Vladimir Putin assured that Russia could change its military doctrine, providing for the possibility of delivering a “preemptive strike” to disarm the enemy. He stated that Moscow is considering adopting the Washington doctrine of “preemptive strike”:

“Firstly, it was the United States that developed the pre-emptive strike doctrine. Moscow should perhaps consider adopting the ideas the Americans have developed to protect their security. We just think about it.”

At the same time, the Russian president said that his country’s cruise missiles and hypersonic systems are “more modern and efficient” than those of the United States. The US State Department, in a commentary on Putin’s statement, emphasized;

“Any mention of nuclear weapons, however vague, is completely irresponsible.”

The specter of nuclear war has become more frequent since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, blatantly demonstrating the erosion of the global security architecture dating back to the Cold War era. Agence France-Presse notes that Russia’s recent military setbacks on the Ukrainian front have raised real concerns that Moscow is considering using its nuclear arsenal.

A few days earlier, Lloyd Austin, US Secretary of Defense, notedthat Russia is expanding and modernizing its nuclear arsenal. The Russian president warned that any country that dares to attack Russia with nuclear weapons will disappear from the face of the earth. He assured that Russia does not have a preemptive nuclear first strike mandate, unlike the United States, but modern Russian hypersonic weapons ensure that the Russian Federation can respond decisively if attacked.

At the same time, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said in Telegram that Moscow is increasing the pace of production of new powerful weapons, since, allegedly, it opposes not only Ukraine, but also many Western states:

“It is much more difficult for us – our enemy has dug in not only in the Kiev province of our native Little Russia. He is in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and in a number of other places sworn to the modern Nazis. Therefore, we are increasing the production of the most powerful means of destruction “.

Medvedev said that the new weapons of the Russian Federation are based “on new principles,” without specifying which ones.
