The Turkish President’s statement caused a sensation – Recep Tayyip Erdogan hinted that he would run for the presidency for the last time, and then pass the baton to the “youth”.
Erdogan’s statement, made during a speech in Samsud, is reported by CNN Greecequoting:
“We will start building the century of Turkey with the support we ask for the last time on our behalf from our people in 2023. We will pass on this sacred flag to our youth.”
Erdogan has been in power since 2003. Both the president himself and his Islamist-conservative Justice and Development Party (AKP) hope to retain control of the country in parliamentary and presidential elections in June 2023. However, there are plenty of problems facing the Turkish leader. In the first place – reached 84.4% inflation.
In October, Erdogan voiced his desire to prepare a new constitution for the country, “democratic, simple and far-sighted.” Some observers believe that this was interpreted as an intention to change the two-term limit of the Turkish constitution.
