Dendias: "Attacks on civilians are war crimes"

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias denounced Russia’s war crimes from Kyiv, where he met his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba in a bunker as alarm sirens sounded while the diplomats were at the Foreign Ministry.

The Foreign Ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Diplomatic Training and held a joint press conference.

“The city and the whole country are daily the target of brutal attacks. As a result, dozens of unarmed, innocent people were killed and injured. Greece condemns these attacks in the strongest terms. These attacks constitute war crimes,” Dendias said. He added that for Greece, respect for international law, territorial integrity and sovereignty of all peoples “is the holy gospel of Greek foreign policy.”

Greece condemns in the strongest possible terms the terrorist attacks in Kyiv, which are war crimes. Respect for international law, territorial integrity and sovereignty of all peoples is the “Holy Gospel” policy (joint statement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine @DmytroKuleba).

He confirmed Athens’ condemnation of the Russian invasion and added that they do not recognize the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories.

Earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, together with his Ukrainian counterpart, laid a bouquet of flowers at the monument to the fallen defenders of Ukraine in Kyiv, as a sign of respect for those who fell fighting for its sovereignty and independence.

At the beginning of his visit to Kyiv, Mr. Dendias met at the Greek Embassy with Tatyana Plachkova, Chairperson of the Greek-Ukrainian Friendship Group of the Ukrainian Parliament, Nikolay Trofimenko, Rector of Mariupol State University, and Lina Themistocleous, Chargé d’Affaires of the Cypriot Embassy.

The agenda included issues of parliamentary diplomacy, Greek-Ukrainian relations, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union, academic issues and the Greek diaspora. Mr. Dendias fully condemned revisionism and thanked Ms. Themistocleous for her contribution to repatriation operations from Ukraine, including Greek citizens and expatriates.
