News in English from Greece

It was a long time ago: the then Greek Prime Minister Simitis was visiting London. The cultural part of the visit program included a visit to the British Museum. The cameras caught Simitis smiling in the center of the Greek hall…

– Look at this idiot, he is smiling, – my friend Margarita was indignant, – instead of screaming and stamping her feet, instead of demanding back what was stolen by the British!

Margarita is from Sicily, such a fiery Sicilian. That is, you will not calm down, you will not calm down with reasonable arguments like “we are civilized people …”.

“What civilization are you talking about,” she shouted, “oh, Santa Maria, what civilization?!” Those are thieves!

Now I’ll lose count how many times since then I’ve written about the Parthenon marbles taken out of Greece occupied by the Turks by the “noble” English ambassador … And again, I’ll lose count how many times Greece asked to return these marbles to her.

It’s not just about priceless marbles – part of the Parthenon, declared a national symbol with Greece’s independence. It’s about a part of a great culture that has been torn away from its homeland … And by whom? A kind of civilized country… However, human civilization, in the light of recent events, has lost a lot in my eyes…

So, our current Prime Minister is going to visit London. And for some reason I decided that the moment for the return of the marbles is now very suitable. For me, this moment lasts for many years: for the return of the stolen moment is always the right time, isn’t it?

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis intends to negotiate with his British counterpart Liz Truss on the return of the Parthenon marbles taken out by Lord Elgin…

– At a time when Liz Truss will seek to strengthen her authority, and when the UK has demonstrated its image to the whole world during the funeral of the Queen, it will be a fantastic gesture, – says Kyriakos Mitsotakis … And he promises to almost start a conversation with his British counterpart with … marbles.

I really don’t understand what is in the gesture, if it happens, is fantastic? That is, to return the stolen is already a fantasy for us ?!

Again, according to Mitsotakis, King Charles, whom he knows personally, “should remain neutral in this matter, by virtue of his position, but supports the initiative to reunite the Parthenon marble sculptures …” They allegedly talked more than once on this topic …

In fairness, it must be admitted that, according to a Sunday Times poll conducted in the summer of 2022, 78% of Britons polled supported the return of the sculptures.

Well, let’s wait and see. So far, the chair under Mrs. Truss is swaying so much that she may simply not have time to make that fantastic gesture …
