Smartphones with the highest level of radiation

Mobile phone use can have deadly health consequences for users, according to a major study by the Department of Biology at the University of Athens.

It began 8 years ago and is still going on, but scientists have already concluded that excessive use of mobile phones can cause a variety of problems – from cancer of the auditory nerve to reduced fertility, changes in genetic material and accelerated “cell death”.

Leading researcher, Professor of Cell Biology and Radiobiology at the University of Athens Loukas Margaritis notes: “Our experiments were carried out on laboratory animals and in cultures of human cells in real conditions of using a mobile phone”.

It is impossible to conduct experiments on humans, except for the study of electroencephalograms, epidemiological studies, blood flow in the ear, etc. All of them, around the world, have demonstrated the impact of mobile phone use on the ear.

Mobile phones are dangerous near the body (near the ear, in the pockets of clothes) and especially for a long time every day. The myth that they are not harmful to our health must finally be dispelled.” emphasizes the professor.

The health effects, Mr. Margaritis explains, depend on the type of mobile phone and, in particular, on SAR, which is the specific absorption rate of radiation measured in watts per kilogram of body weight and varies from one device to another.

The Bankless Times has published an updated list of smartphones that have the highest radio emission.

The Bankless Times has classified smartphones based on the SAR value, which measures how much the body absorbs electromagnetic radiation. Results are reported in watts per kilogram (W/kg).

Phones with the highest SAR radiation

The smartphone at the top of this list is the Motorola Edge, with a SAR of 1.79 W/kg, which is above the FCC radiation limit of 1.6 W/kg.

The Edge is followed by the ZTE Axon 11 5G with a SAR of 0.20 W less than the Edge, 1.59 W/kg to be exact.

Third on the list is the OnePlus 6T with a SAR rating of 1.55/kg.

Sony smartphones also make it onto the list, with the Xperia XA2 Plus and Xperia XZ1 Compact coming in fourth and eighth.

Regulators around the world set their own maximum SAR level that devices are allowed to emit. In the US, the FCC limits are 1.6 W/kg, and the only smartphone that exceeds them is the Motorola Edge.

However, as noted by the FCC, all smartphones emit a certain amount of radiation, and the factors that regulate its amount are device type, model, distance to the nearest cell tower. The FCC states that measures to limit RF exposure include limiting the use of smartphones and the use of hands-free accessories.

Unfortunately, the impact of radiation from smartphones on humans has not yet been sufficiently studied, so there is no specific bar after which a device can be considered hazardous to health. Nevertheless, in the same Germany, only gadgets whose radioactive emission is below 0.6 W / kg are certified. All models presented in the rating exceed this mark by more than 2 times.

As for smartphones with the least radio emission, almost all devices are owned by Samsung.

Editor’s Note: Most of the models featured in the study were released between 2016 and 2021. Others are now being released. Nevertheless, there are trends and patterns that point to manufacturers that are less or more concerned with the security of their smartphones. Therefore, if health is more important to you than “show-offs”, take an interest in the SAR level of the model you want to purchase.

Also, for unknown reasons, the list did not include the best-selling and popular models from Xiaomi and IPhone (which occupied the worst places in previous ratings). Either their quality is now beyond competition, or other (probably mercantile) reasons prevailed among the authors of the study.
