The longest motorway in Greece: how much is the toll

Modern highways allow people and goods to move quickly and easily, which is also important in the tourism industry. In Greece, the largest motorway has a length of 670 km.

For more than 30 years, Egnatia Odos (Εγνατία Οδός) has been the great dream of the inhabitants of Northern Helladia, and not only, of connecting Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace, and rescuing them from isolation.

The inclusion of the object in the priority projects of trans-European networks has consolidated its importance as a link between the markets of the East and large industrial centers of the West, writes carandmotor.gr.

Egnatia Odos is of great geostrategic importance for the Balkans and South-Eastern Europe, as it is a “transport hub” of pan-European routes running from north to south:

• Berlin – Sofia – Thessaloniki.
• Helsinki – Alexandroupolis.
• Vienna – Belgrade – Thessaloniki.

Motorway 2 (A2), as noted on the map of Egnatia Odos, is the largest highway in Greece and is part of European road 90. It starts from Igoumenitsa in Epirus and ends at the Greek-Turkish border (Κήπους της Θράκης).

Construction work on the facility began in 1994 and the entire project was completed in 2014. The maximum permitted speed is 130 km/h. The highway includes a number of tunnels and bridges as it passes through the mountainous terrain of the Pindos range and near the Vermios mountain volume.

The total number of dual road tunnels on Egnatia-Odos is 73, with a total length of 100 km (in one branch – 50 km along the route). The entire Egnatia Odos project cost 6 billion euros, and the tunnels cost about 1.8 billion euros.

The first tolls for Egnatia Odos were at Polymylos, which started in September 2010. To date there are 13 toll booths with transit costs ranging from 50 cents to 2.40 euros.

The total of 13 tolls for the passage of a car is 19.20 euros.
