Organs donated from 6-year-old brain-dead boy

The countdown has begun before the handover of the unfortunate boy’s organs for transplantation to people in other parts of Greece and Italy.

Unfortunately for the parents of 6-year-old Konstantinos, who fell from a balcony in Krini, Patras, on Monday afternoon, the news was disappointing. The child’s injuries were so severe that the brain was declared dead by medical experts.

Upon learning of this dramatic development, the parents of the unfortunate Konstantinos made the courageous decision to donate his organs, with appropriate encouragement from the director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Andreas Iliadis, to give life to others. As Mr. Iliadis said, “His mother will be very happy if the heart of her baby continues to beat in the chest of one of her brothers, saves the life of another, if her baby was not destined to survive.”

The transplant operation for Konstantinos’s organs is scheduled to begin late in the evening after consultation with the National Organisation, with donor material expected to be delivered to other parts of Greece and Italy. According to Mr. Iliadis, two teams from Italy are expected to take the little boy’s liver and heart. In addition, the kidneys will be transported to Thessaloniki, while the eyes and cornea will be sent to the Transplant Bank of Gennimatas Hospital (Athens).
