Those arrested in the case of Alkis Kabanos began to turn in accomplices

Football hooligans arrested in connection with last week’s murder of 19-year-old Alkis Kabanos broke their silence on what happened on that fateful night, sources said Monday, giving investigators a better understanding of the developments.

It is reported that eight more young people, arrested on Sunday evening in Thessaloniki, will appear before the public prosecutor from Wednesday to Friday. The arrests were made on the basis of warrants issued by the investigating authorities on Sunday morning. The youths face prosecution for murder and two attempted murders.

On Monday, those arrested appeared before an investigating judge and were given a deadline to prepare their defense.

The seven arrested are Greeks and one Albanian citizen, aged between 19 and 22, who have been identified as participants in fatal attacks in the Harilau region, shortly after midnight last Monday.

23-year-old suspect who fled to Albania

Three other people have been identified in the same case, including a man of Albanian origin who was arrested last Wednesday, as well as two people who have so far avoided arrest. It is reported that one of the latter, a 20-year-old boy, fled to Albania one day after the murder, and an international arrest warrant was issued against him.

It is reported that on Tuesday afternoon, in the metropolitan area of Omonia, another person was arrested, whom the police had been looking for for 3 days – a 25-year-old Greek who, unlike the others, lives in Athens.

All suspects are fans of the PAOK football club in Thessaloniki and members of various fan associations.

Six of the eight arrested on Sunday had a history of legal troubles related to possession of illegal weapons, damage and public disorder, and incidents in stadiums.

The boy arrested on Wednesday and another man who managed to escape to Albania attacked two Aris fans in March 2019 in the same place where Alkis Kabanos was killed. The first was identified as hitting Kabanos on the head with a club. In addition, the knife that stabbed Cabanos to death was found to have the fingerprints of another of those arrested on Sunday.
