Greeks received half of the salary of a European during the crisis

The salary of one worker in Greece during the crisis is 60.2% of the average for the euro area. The employment rate fell by 12%.

The income of citizens in the era of memoranda, the working and living conditions of workers during the economic crisis (2009-2019) are demonstrated by the INE-GSEE study on improving the quality of work in both Greece and the Eurozone. According to the results, earnings per employee in our country amounted to 60.2% of the average for the euro area in 2019, compared to 81.7% in 2009.

As for the index of “employee income” in the country, it fell from 0.26 in 2009 to 0.18 in 2016, and then remained at a very low level, despite a slight improvement over the three years 2017-2019. The deviation of Greece from the average for the euro area is now about 0.28 points.

The proportion of temporary part-time employees hired steadily changed during the same period. In particular, in 2019, the number of those who indicated the inability to find a stable job as the reason for their temporary employment among all employees was 9.3% in Greece, compared with 8.7% in 2009. Among employees with temporary contracts, the corresponding percentages in our country were 73.7% and 70.5%, compared with 52.2% and 49.4% in the euro area.

Work time
In 2016, in Greece, the percentage of employees working more than 48 hours was 19.4%, while in 2009 it was 16.9%. Although this percentage fell to 16.6% in 2019, our country still shows the worst performance among the member states of the eurozone. Greece has the third largest percentage of flexible shift workers among the eurozone countries. In particular, in 2019 this percentage was about 28.4% (16.1% in the euro area), and in 2009 – 19.2% (14.4% in the euro area).

According to the OECD, in 2019 Greece was ranked 8th among the Eurozone member states in terms of protecting workers from individual or collective layoffs, while in 2009 it was ranked 3rd after Portugal and the Netherlands (Note: Cyprus and Malta are an exception).

Unemployment

The employment rate in Greece during the memorandum period fell by 12 percentage points (from 60.8% in 2019 to 48.8% in 2013), while in the Eurozone as a whole, the corresponding decline was below one percentage point (from 64.3% up to 63.5%). ). Although the employment rate in Greece has been gradually increasing since 2014, it is still at a lower level in 2019 than in 2009. Accordingly, the deterioration of employment prospects in our country is a particularly high level of long-term unemployment, while the percentage of unemployed unemployed for more than a year amounted to 70.1% in 2019, compared with 40.4% in 2009. The corresponding percentages in the euro area were 43.5% and 35%.
