SOS: stay at home with tightly closed windows!

The National Observatory of Athens is warning residents of several districts of Attica to take measures not to harm their health due to air pollution by particulate matter after a large-scale night fire in Varibobi.

“The situation in many parts of Athens is now bad in terms of harmful PM2.5 particles (fine respirable particles with a diameter of about 2.5 microns or less). We draw the attention of the residents of the basin in areas with high PM2.5 values to stay in their homes with hermetically sealed windows and doors, ”the observatory representatives said, citing a detailed map.

Important Information: If you need to go outside, use an N95, KN95 or FFP2 mask that provides protection against PM2.5 particles.

Data taken from European air quality measurement platform PurpleAir: real-time air quality monitoring based on next-generation “Internet of Things” sensors. (The unit is micrograms per cubic meter. The displayed values are not numbered and must be divided by a factor of 1.8).

Caution – danger!

In the midst of wildfires in many parts of Greece (Varibombi, Evia, Mani, Kos, etc.), in combination with the heat, the Ministry of Health recommends that measures be taken to protect the population of the affected areas. The goal is to protect citizens from the consequences of air smoke.

Recommendations for people at high risk

People with respiratory conditions – heart disease, children and people over 65 – should avoid any outdoor physical activity. It is also recommended to avoid being outdoors, especially in areas with high traffic. People with asthma may need more frequent sedative inhalations. In case of persistent symptoms, it is recommended to consult with your doctor.

Recommendations to the population

Everyone is advised to avoid any outdoor exercise and limit the amount of time they spend outside the home. Keep interior doors, balcony doors, and windows closed while you are indoors.
