Elafonisos is a small island in the Lakonikos Gulf of the Aegean Sea. It is located at the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese, west of the Elos Peninsula and Cape Malei. To the south is the Elafonisos Strait, an important sea route, and the island of Kythira. The island is only about 19 square kilometers, and its beautiful beaches attract up to 3,000 visitors a day during the summer months.

However, the city’s long history goes back centuries, almost 5,000 years ago, as the larger region is known to have been inhabited in the earliest years of Greek history.

Beaches on the island
Elafonisos, which is at the southernmost point of the Peloponnese, boasts pristine snorkeling conditions and quiet stretches of pink sand ideal for exploring all year round.
The most famous island beach called Sarakiniko, it is known for its long sandy stretches and gorgeous turquoise waters.
Simos beach, another popular choice, is located just outside Sarakiniko and is recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. It has the same crystal clear waters as Sarakiniko. Half of the beach is organized, which means there are beach bars with sun loungers and parasols for guests, while the other is completely natural.

Another interesting thing to discover while visiting Elafonisos is the main church of Agios Spyridon. This church is built on a tiny, separate piece of land that is connected to the island by a bridge over crystal clear waters.
Worshipers must cross the bridge on foot to pray in an exquisite little church.
