Russia: the beginning of the third wave of coronavirus? The growing epidemiological burden is confirmed by the data

The outbreak of coronavirus in Russia shows the maximum number of new cases after March 20. In the Russian capital, the largest number of infected people has been recorded since January 17, TASS reports.

According to the infectious disease specialist Yevgeny Timakov, the increase in the incidence of coronavirus is associated with the onset of the third wave of the pandemic. According to him, she came to Russia a long time ago, and this is evidenced not only by the increase in new cases, but also by the increase in mortality. Before the New Year, the death rate was 2%, now it is 4.5%. Over the past few days, the mortality rate is close to the number 400 – 392, 393, 387. Timakov associated the increase in morbidity after the holidays with testing, since people returned home after the holidays from abroad.

The operational headquarters to combat the spread of coronavirus on May 14 said that the maximum number of COVID-19 infected since March 29 was detected in Russia – 9,462 infected. The main infectious disease specialist of the capital, Nikolai Malyshev, believes that this is due to the May holidays, but there is nothing wrong with that. However, this number is 12.9% higher than the previous day.

Over the past 5 days, the transmissibility index has remained above 1, which was last observed in January, and confirms the increase in the epidemiological burden. The incidence rate at the beginning of the week was 5.6 cases of infection per 100,000 inhabitants, and today it is 5.8 per 100,000. In Moscow, 3818 infections have been recorded in the last 24 hours. Timakov warns:

“People relaxed, people are no longer in control of the process. Seeing the official statistics, they relax and comply less with the recommendations of Rospotrebnadzor, which will contribute to an additional increase in morbidity. “
