Heavy rains in Japan caused landslides. As a result of the natural disaster, houses were destroyed, and 19 residents were missing.
State broadcaster NHK reports heavy rainfall in the city of Atami (central Japan), causing landslides destroying homes. A powerful avalanche, carrying a stream of dirty black water and all kinds of debris, covered a number of residential buildings after Saturday’s torrential rains.
According to Agence France-Presse, citing a representative of the district, the whereabouts of at least 19 people are unknown in Shizuoka Prefecture, some remain locked in their homes.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has assembled an emergency response team to monitor the situation and respond quickly. The precipitation that has flooded Atami since Friday has already significantly exceeded the average July level, not only for the Shizuoka region, where the city is located, but also for neighboring Kanagawa prefecture.
The prefectural authorities declared the highest level of danger for 21 thousand residential buildings and urged 35.5 thousand residents to evacuate immediately.
