23 professional firefighters and three volunteers have been injured in several forest fires that have been raging in Greece since last Sunday.
Three firefighters are hospitalized with burns, 20 remain in the hospital with respiratory problems.
One firefighter lost consciousness Wednesday while fighting a fire near Megara in western Attica. His colleagues, police officers and volunteers rushed to him, and a local resident brought a pillow. He was taken to a hospital in Athens by ambulance.
According to a Mega TV correspondent who was at the scene, “there was a strong wind, a suffocating atmosphere from smoke, and the firefighters were without masks!”
