Experts say the vaccines work against all new strains of coronavirus known to date.
Even in the case of the Indian version of Delta and when receiving only the first vaccination, the drugs provide a high level of protection, over 90%, from death and severe forms of coronavirus, the BBC reports. This is data from a large-scale study conducted by Public Health England, a British epidemiological service that studies infections in the country from April 12 to June 4.
During this time, the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) was found in more than 14,000 people, including previously vaccinated patients. But only 166 infected people needed medical attention, while most of them had not been vaccinated before.
Studies have shown that even the first shot of Pfizer vaccine reduces the likelihood of severe Covid-19 by 94%, and the first shot with AstraZeneca vaccine by 71%. After the second vaccination, the effectiveness of these vaccines was 96% and 92%, respectively.
