In Greece, commercial stores will remain open at night

In an unprecedented ruling, the Greek government has decided to open commercial stores at night, that is, from 9 pm to 6 am the next day.

The amendment was introduced by the Ministry of Development and provides for night work of commercial shops. In the relevant preface, the ministry uses the pretext of commercial actions such as “White Nights” [проходит раз в год!] and bazaars.

However, as reportedit is not limited to these activities, as it states in general terms and vaguely that the opening hours of commercial stores and stores providing services to consumers who are allowed to operate from 06:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday, on Sundays may be extended until 6 am the next day.

“The extension of hours of operation at night is subject to the decision of the competent mayor at the suggestion of the local trade association,” the ministry said, clearly alluding to tourist areas. The rule also includes several days of the year when night work forbidden.

The ban on the operation of commercial stores at night is provided for in the regulation on Sunday, which are held national electionsin order, as indicated, to ensure the unhindered exercise of voting rights by those who are engaged in commercial activities or work in the mercantile sector, and in particular non-residents.

The regulation states that commercial stores and stores providing services to consumers, You are not allowed to work on the following days:

  • First day of the year (New Year).
  • On the day of the Epiphany (January 6).
  • On Clean Monday (movable holiday), except for grocery stores.
  • On the day of the celebration of the Greek Revolution of 1821 (March 25)
  • Easter Sunday and Monday (movable holiday).
  • On Labor Day (May 1).
  • On the day of the celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15).
  • On the day of the celebration of the OHI (October 28).
  • On Christmas and the day after (December 25 and 26).
  • The Sunday on which national elections are held.

When Parliament will vote on the amendment is not yet clear, as it is due to be dissolved on April 12 in connection with the upcoming elections on May 21. It should be noted that the operation of commercial stores at night must also be accompanied by the legislation of the Department of Labor regarding the payment of workers on a night shift.
