WHO: who needs revaccination against COVID-19 – 3 risk groups

The World Health Organization has released updated recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination. These relate to additional booster doses and intervals between vaccinations.

The recommendations of the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts, posted on official website, it is emphasized that conditionally the population of the planet was divided into 3 groups according to the degree of risk, depending on the need for their vaccination. The reason was the herd immunity obtained through vaccinations and transferred COVID-19.

In the high risk group:

• aged people;
• young people with comorbidities (diabetes, heart disease, and others);
• people with immunodeficiency conditions – transplant recipients, people with HIV, children from 6 months;
• pregnant women;
• medical workers.

For this group, WHO recommends the introduction of booster zones 6-12 months after the last dose. But the timing depends on age and immunodeficiency states.

In the medium risk group:

• healthy adults without comorbidities (up to 50-60 years);
• children and adolescents with comorbidities.

For this group, the first vaccination (1 or 2 vaccinations, depending on the vaccine) and the first booster are recommended. Further revaccination is considered inappropriate by the WHO, as it has a low overall impact on public health.

At low risk healthy children and adolescents. According to the WHO, vaccination of this group is safe, but has little effect on general public health.

Priority is given to people from a high-risk group, because in the event of an illness, patients will create a significant burden on the medical system. The organization emphasizes that due to changes in the epidemiological situation, these recommendations may change. But they express hope that the pandemic will end in 2023.
