The delivery of SPIKE-NLOS missile systems to the needs of the armed forces was approved by the Greek Government Council for National Security and Foreign Affairs (KYSEA) at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday morning.
SPIKE-NLOS is an Israeli guided anti-tank and anti-personnel missile with a tandem charge of a high-explosive anti-tank warhead.
According to the military website onalert.gr, the Greek Armed Forces would like to acquire Spike NLOS guided missile systems under a contract valued at around 370 million euros. It is expected that some units of the ground army, as well as the Air Force, in particular, attack helicopters of the Apache type, will be equipped with them. These missiles will add to the arsenal of four gunboats and four unorthodox Navy warships.
It is noted that the delivery of SPIKE NLOS missile systems particularly worried the Turkish press due to the increased range of missiles, in particular, up to 50 kilometers when launched from a helicopter and up to 32 kilometers when launched from land or sea platforms.
In early January, the Department of Defense said it was a complex weapon system “applicable to ground forces vehicles, surface ships and helicopters, and stressed that three separate contracts with different conditions and technical specifications have been entered into.”
