Numerous actions in support of Ukraine took place yesterday in many European cities on the anniversary of the start of the full-scale Russian invasion on February 24, 2022.
Ukrainians living in Greece gathered in the center of Athens to support their compatriots, to say their “No!” war and mark the anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion. People with a huge Ukrainian flag walked to Syntagma Square, holding posters calling for an end to the war. A similar action was held in Thessaloniki.
There were 13 demonstrations in Berlin: eleven for Ukraine, one for peace and one against sending arms to Kyiv. The largest, organized under the slogan “we will never forget”, gathered, according to police, about 8,000 people. In the capital of Germany, in front of the Russian embassy, a Russian T-72 tank, shot down during the fighting near Kiev, was installed. The initiator of the installation, the director of the Berlin Story Bunker Museum Enno Lenze, said that he wanted to demonstrate to the people of Germany in this way “how cruel and shameful war is”:
“People think tanks are invincible. But blowing him up shows he’s vulnerable, and war is not a good idea. You shouldn’t start it.”
In front of the embassy, an art installation called “Russian World” was also organized. In the center of the city, at the Brandenburg Gate, several demonstrations against the war took place. In western Germany, between the cities of Osnabrück and Münster, some 18,000 protesters lined up in a human chain for peace, holding hands.
An action of solidarity with Ukraine was held in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, the participants of which carried the Ukrainian and Georgian flags nearby. About 30,000 people gathered in front of the parliament building, singing the anthems of their country and Ukraine.
A moment of silence was observed near the residence of the British Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street for those who died as a result of the Russian invasion. After Washington, London is Ukraine’s largest donor. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also honored the dead with a minute of silence as two singers in traditional Ukrainian shirts sang the Ukrainian national anthem.
They also demonstrated their solidarity with Ukraine in Portugal. The parliament building in Lisbon was lit up with the national colors of Ukraine.
On the anniversary of the invasion, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the people of Ukraine with words of support on Twitter, writing: “France is on your side. Solidarity. Victory. Peace.” The Eiffel Tower in Paris was lit up in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
In Bucharest, several hundred people, mostly Ukrainians, marched to the Russian embassy, chanting slogans: “Crimea is Ukraine”, “Russia is a terrorist”, “Stop the war”.
Demonstrations were held in Warsaw and Bern, and in Geneva, diplomats from about 30 countries gathered outside the United Nations building and honored the dead Ukrainians with a minute of silence. CNN Greece.
