A large shark over three meters long, caught by fishermen on Friday (September 16) in Paleochora (Chania), attracted the attention of passers-by. According to zarpanews, this is a shark of the genus Alopias, which includes sharks, also known as “thresher sharks” or “sea foxes”.
Genus Alopias ( alopias ) includes sharks, which are also known as fox sharks and sharks harvesters. These are large fish that are found in temperate and tropical oceans throughout the world, as well as in Greece. The genus Alopias is the only genus in the family Alopieides and includes three species.
- Alopias pelagicus (Nakamura, 1935), pelagic alopia
- Alopias superciliosus (RT Lowe, 1841)
- Alopias vulpinus (Bonnaterre, 1788) common alopia.
A characteristic feature is the very long upper lobe of the caudal fin. English name for these sharks Thresher shark Literally translated as “thresher shark”. This is due to the fact that when hunting, these marine inhabitants use their long tail fin as a whip, knocking prey into a flock and stunning it.
