According to data ELSTATfood category inflation rose to 2.8% in August, with olive oil, fish and breakfast cereals posting double-digit year-on-year growth.
Olive oil continues to lead the price growth race, up 49.1% in August compared to the previous year. Fresh fish prices have risen by 11.3% over the year, while breakfast cereals have risen by 11.2%. The mineral water – soft drinks – fruit juices category has also seen a 6.9% increase, dried fruit and nuts have risen by 5%, the sugar – chocolate – sweets – ice cream category by 4.8%, and fresh vegetables by 3.1%. Meat and processed/canned vegetables have risen by 1.4%.
“In the last 20 days, prices have increased for some products, such as baby wipes, which have increased by 40% compared to 20 days ago. And also food products, which have increased by more than 13%. We are expecting a new wave of price increases,” says Apostolos Ratopoulos, president of the Union of Consumer Workers of Greece.
Fish and seafood prices have also gone up. Antonis Stefanides, a shop manager at the fish market in Rentis, told of the price increase this morning.
“The prices are as affordable as we can make them. Gofari (Bluefish) costs 12.90, and erase (grouper) – 32 euros. Prices have risen because fishing trawlers are going out less often due to a shortage of personnel, and also because some fish are brought in from the islands, where we pay for the transport costs. We try to sell them as close to cost as possible. But there are also more economical fish,” he noted.
