On July 15, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak announced that the country would purchase 116 used M-1 Abrams tanks from the US.
According to Visegrad 24, deliveries will begin after Poland receives a batch of Abrams M1A2 tanks ordered from the United States. Judging by the message above, this will happen no earlier than 2025?
The delivery is part of an effort to replace the tanks sent by Poland to Ukraine (about 240 T-72M1 and T-72M1R), as well as the recent announcement of the delivery of 250 new M-1A2C Abrams main battle tanks, 26 M-88A2 Hercules and 17 M-1074 JAB (Joint Assault Bridges).
It is expected that the preparation of the first of 250 new tanks will begin in 2024, with the first deliveries expected in 2025. The type of used M-1 Abrams that Poland will receive has not been announced, but it will likely be the M-1 version 1A1.
It is also not yet clear whether Poland will pay for the tanks, or whether they will go within the framework of the previously announced lend-leasewhich provided for the allocation of part of the amount for the re-equipment of Poland and some other NATO countries with new weapons.
As we reported earlier, Poland hands over Ukraine 232 upgraded tanks PT-91 Twardy. Kyiv will receive from Warsaw more than two hundred PT-91 Twardy – an upgraded version of the Soviet main tank T-72M1.
Earlier in May, Warsaw already sent 240 modernized T-72s to the Ukrainian side. According to the agency, the T-72M1 tanks that Poland sent to Ukraine use obsolete ammunition. They are not equipped with a night sight, which limits the use of tanks in the dark, which means that we are talking about the first models of the T72 tank, which did not even have Agat sights (PNK-4SR).
However, Ukraine has (at least had before) experience in the modernization of tanks of the T-72 series, with the installation of a French night vision device with electron-optical converters and a night sight with the ability to fire a guided missile. The modernization also provided for equipping the tank with a set of modern digital radio stations and satellite navigation systems, which made it possible to more effectively use the vehicle’s weapons in combat operations.
