Diabetes Warning: ‘Healthy’ Foods Can Raise Blood Sugar

When it comes to type 2 diabetes, your diet is key. Being able to control your blood sugar levels will help prevent further complications associated with this disease.

However, the expert warns that you should limit your intake of one type of “healthy” food so that sugar levels do not jump into the red zone, according to a British publication. Express.

Carbohydrate-rich foods are the main culprits for high blood glucose levels. While you might think it’s all about sugar and cake, there is one fruit that can cause the exact same spikes.

“Bananas are a healthy fruit that contains a plethora of health-promoting nutrients,” says Nataly Komova, JustCBD Fitness Expert. “They are high in fiber, potassium and vitamin B6. However, the high sugar content in some varieties of bananas can negatively impact blood glucose levels and cause them to spike, especially for those who are sensitive to carbohydrates.”

Although this fruit has a lot of health benefits, people with type 2 diabetes are advised not to eat it too often. Dr. David Unwin, of the National Health Service in Southport, said that eating one banana is like eating six tablespoons of sugar. However, many diabetes experts disagree with this statement.

What happens in the body after you eat a banana? A medium-sized banana contains about 23 grams of carbohydrates, including 2.6 grams of fiber and 12 grams of simple sugars. When you eat it, the body breaks down carbohydrates into simple sugars. They then enter the bloodstream, causing glucose levels to rise. Ultimately, all carbohydrates are converted into sugars that enter the bloodstream.

But it is also important to consider how quickly they cause a rise in blood glucose levels. This is where the glycemic index comes into play. It shows how quickly a particular food raises blood sugar levels when eaten separately from other food, experts at Diabetes UK explain.

The glycemic index can range from 0 to 100. Those carbohydrates that are absorbed slowly have an index of 55 and below. If we talk about bananas, then their glycemic index varies from medium to low, that is, from 62 to 42, depending on the ripeness of a particular fruit, that is, they are not so harmful. In addition, Diabetes UK experts report that in the long term, these fruits are significantly healthier than the usual piece of cake.

What are the symptoms of type 2 diabetes? Many people suffer from type 2 diabetes without even knowing it. This is because its symptoms do not necessarily make you feel unwell. The symptoms of this disease are:

  • frequent urination, especially at night;
  • constant strong thirst;
  • severe fatigue;
  • causeless weight loss;
  • itching in the genital area or frequent stomatitis;
  • long healing wounds and cuts;
  • blurred vision.

If you are experiencing symptoms of type 2 diabetes or are worried that you may be at increased risk of developing the disease, be sure to check with your doctor.
