Wastewater Analysis: Indicators Decreased During Holy Week

An improvement in the epidemiological situation during Holy Week was observed practically throughout the territory of Greece, based on the data provided by experts ΕΟΔΥ.

As reported by the Εθνικό Δίκτυο Επιδημιολογίας Λυμάτων του ΕΟΔΥ services, in the period April 26-29, 2021 compared to the week of April 19-25, 2021, there were trends towards a decrease or even stabilization of the SARS-CoV-2 virus situation in urban wastewater in 9 out of 11 regions of the country.

Clearly declining changes were recorded in Agios Nikolaos (-85%), Rethymno (-79%) and Thessaloniki (-39%), while minor changes were recorded in Chania (-28%), Larissa (-19%) and in Xanthi (-16%).

The viral load remains almost constant in the Attica region, Volos and Heraklion (the rate in wastewater ranged from -7% to + 7%).

An unfavorable upward trend in viral load was observed only in Alexandroupolis (+ 71%), while a slight increase (+ 25%) was a change in viral load in Patras urban wastewater.

Details by region:

Attica: Between April 26-29, there was a statistically insignificant decrease (-3%) in the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater compared to the previous week. The viral load remains high. Thessaloniki: Between April 26-29, Thessaloniki saw a decrease (-39%) in the viral load of urban wastewater compared to the previous week of April 19-25.
