The university police will begin their duties in early June, the minister said

Citizens Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos said on Monday that 400 special guards will complete their training tomorrow, Tuesday, and after a few days off they will start patrolling two major university campuses.

He added that the university police will begin their duties in early June. Theodoriakos went on to say that the first patrols will start at the campus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, followed by the campuses of the National Technical University of Athens in Zografou and the Athens University of Economics and Business.

The exact structure of the new university police has yet to be determined by a decree to be prepared by the Ministers for Citizens’ Protection and Education.

When completed, it will need to be approved by the Council of State, a process that is expected to end without surprises following its recent ruling that the presence of police corps in universities does not violate academic freedoms and the legal status of self-government institutions.
