Greek consul from Mariupol will arrive in Athens tomorrow

Manolis Androulakis, the Greek consul in Mariupol, is flying tomorrow from Bucharest to Athens, according to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On March 20 at 16:30, Mr. Androulakis is leaving Romania on a TAROM flight. At the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”, the diplomat will be met by the Secretary General of the Greek Foreign Ministry Themistoklis Demiris and Kostas Fragogiannis, Deputy Minister for Economic Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, representing Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, who is on a business trip.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis contacted the Consul General in Mariupol, noted his courage and thanked him for his responsibility in performing professional services. Their personal meeting will soon take place, as now the prime minister is on self-isolation with coronavirus, writes newsbeast.gr.

The Greek consul was at the epicenter military events in besieged Mariupol. The diplomat’s family asked the Greek authorities to find the most convenient way to repatriate him, as the consul’s life is in danger.

On March 16, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias reported to the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee that the Greek Consul left from the besieged Mariupol and is on the way to the Ukrainian city of Zaporozhye.

During the three days that have passed since the departure of the consul from Mariupol, the diplomat is still was in Ukraine. After spending the night in Zaporozhye, in the morning he set off towards the border. As reported by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on March 17, Mr. Androulakis was near Uman and left for Moldova in the morning to continue his journey to Greece.
