The speaker of the White House, Jen Psaki, announced that the United States will soon impose sanctions against the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics recognized by Russia.
White House: We have been waiting for this step from Russia and are ready for an immediate response. President Biden will soon sign an executive order barring new U.S. investment, trade, and funding in, from, or into the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
This decree will also give the right to impose sanctions on any person who decides to act in these areas of Ukraine. The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Finance will receive additional information in the near future.
In the near future, we will announce additional measures related to Russia’s current flagrant violation of international obligations.

To be clear, these measures are separate and will be applied in addition to the quick and tough economic measures that we have prepared in coordination with allies and partners in case of further Russian invasion of Ukraine.
We continue to consult closely with our allies and partners, including Ukraine, on the next steps and the ongoing escalation of the situation with Russia along the border with Ukraine.
